The Charity

‘To relieve the distressed is a duty incumbent on all men, but particularly on Freemasons, who are linked together by an indissoluble chain of sincere affection. To soothe the unhappy, to sympathise with their misfortunes, to compassionate their miseries, and to restore their troubled minds, is the great aim we have in view’. So said William Preston in his Illustrations of Masonry (1772).

In the 250 years since, Freemasons have sought to help those in society who are less fortunate, less able or for whom life has simply dealt them a “poor hand." So much so that Freemasons are now second only to the National Lottery in supporting charitable causes. Masonic charity is exercised at every level – nationally, through The Freemasons’ Grand Charity which gives to national and international causes, regionally, through Provincial charities which give to regional causes, and also at a local level through charities such as The Redditch Masonic Charity.

Unlike many other organisations, Freemasons never ask the general public for money by making street collections and public appeals. Every Mason is encouraged to give generously within his means and without detriment to himself or his family.  At each Masonic meeting there is normally an Alms collection and there may also be a raffle at the dinner following the meeting. In addition, funds are raised through regular giving schemes and special fund raising events.

The Redditch Masonic Charity has the following aims:

* For the public benefit to preserve and maintain the structure and fabric of the Masonic Hall, Easemore Road, Redditch – a building listed as a Building of Local Interest by Redditch Borough Council (2009)

* To make grants and donations to individuals, organisations and other charities to relieve poverty, sickness, financial hardship and social exclusion.

* To advance the education of the public in the principles of Freemasonry in particular, but not exclusively, by the establishment of a Masonic Heritage Centre.

We believe that Masonry has a valuable role to play in the community and we will be pleased to provide funding to help a wide variety of projects. We don’t top up bank balances but we are willing to consider grants for practical projects. Every application we receive is carefully considered and we provide assistance where our criteria are met. Unfortunately we are unable to help in every case but don’t let that put you off. If you don’t apply, you won’t receive anything!
